Aluminum sheets

Description

The process of manufacturing Aluminum sheets is slightly different from that of MS plain sheets, as they come from different raw material. For Aluminum sheets, the mined ore ‘bauxite’ is heated and purified using a mixture of caustic soda and lime, which yields alumina crystals, used to produce the aluminum sheets. Alumina is then put through a process called electrolysis with the help of positive and negative cathodes made of carbon, to produce liquid aluminum. Extracted liquid aluminum from the process can be poured into different forms to slabs or inglots. These slabs are then hot rolled at around 400oC to form sheets. Finally, these sheets are cold rolled to achieve the desired thickness. The sheets may be rolled into a coil for further surface treatments or annealing processes.

Aluminum sheets are considered crucial for large breadth of applications. High strength-to-weight ratio and great corrosion resistance makes them suitable for vehicle manufacturing, aeronautical industries, electrical appliances, furnishing etc. They are also good conductors of heat, thus making them very usable for the cookware industry.

An extensive ranges of sizes for aluminum sheets are available at Al Ittefaq Steel, Qatar.
